Students of the Mass Communication department of the University of Maiduguri are showing keen interest in their professional calling by identifying news beats they are planning to Major in.

The students expressed their enthusiasm during a biweekly Career Guidance Talk hosted by an alumni of the department, Blessing Tunoh-a practicing journalist.

The conversation held in the University Kanem FM public relation lab last Saturday.

Tunoh, who currently works as the Borno state correspondent for Channels Television volunteered to share both her personal and professional experiences with the student journalists.

The career talk which centered on “Discovering interests or news Beats” accorded the students the opportunity to address stereotypes about field practice and other self development tips.

The visiting journalist engaged the students extensively on the various types of beats they could choose from but she also advised the students to report on their areas of interest.
“Prepare yourself to report whatever interests you” this statement by Tunoh gave the students a guide on what it takes to report ones’ interest with passion.

The areas of interest identified by the participants include Travel, technology, food ,fashion and politics.

Other capacity building skills formed part of the conversation all aimed to prepare the students for the current realities in the world of journalism.

Over thirty 300 level students attended the meeting which is the second in its series hosted by Tunoh.
