Universities across Nigeria will remain shut due to continues strike by ASUU and other non academic unions despite orders by government for schools to reopen.
The Vice Chancellor, Adamawa state university, professor Kaletapwa Farauta said despite all preparations made for reopening, the school will remain shut until ASUU calls off their industrial action.
Schools and academic activities across the country have been on hold for about six months due to the outbreak of the coronavirus disease.
Professor Farauta who spoke to NEWSLINE at the school’s liaison office in Yola said they have put all modalities in place to contain the spread of the disease as directed by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control and the Adamawa state government.
” The school has been fumigated and we are going to make available sanitizers and hand washing equipments for students and staff to use upon resumption. We will also make sure that no student is allowed on campus without face masks,” Professor Farauta added.
She said the Mubi based institution has enough structures to contain returning students and also ensure that social distancing is maintained.
” We have long set up a Covid19 Containment Committee in the school, they are working with the host community and the state Covid19 Containment Committee to ensure that whenever a date is set we will not be running from pillar to post.
” All the protocols will be observed, there is an enlightenment campaign going on now within and outside the school environment,” she stressed.
When asked if the school will reopen on the 12th of October as directed by the state government, the VC said “ASUU is on Strike and Adamawa State University is a member and can only return back to classes when the strike is called-off but like you know, the non academic staff are going to work and non academic activities are going on including the Covid19 Containment Committee members.”
The Vice Chancellor said the next academic session will welcome the first set of law students as the school introduce the law faculty.
She said they are working assiduously on introducing more faculties as well as moved to the permanent site where structures are being built for academic activities.
