Chairman Niger State Independent electoral commission (NSEIC), Alhaji Mohammed Danlami Abubakar

Niger State Independent electoral commission (NSEIC) has announced the postponement of the earlier scheduled forthcoming local government elections slated for Saturday November 7, 2015 to January 16, 2016.

Chairman of the commission, Alhaji Mohammed Danlami Abubakar made the announcement during the stakeholders meeting of political parties held at the commission’s headquarters in Minna on Monday.

Alhaji Abubakar, according to a press statement issued and signed by the commission’s public relations officer (P.R.O), Muhammad Alli, and made available to Newsline, said the shift of the date of the election became necessary due to the problem of logistic that could undermine the peaceful conduct of the earlier scheduled forthcoming local government polls across the 25 local government areas of the state.

He said that the demand for the use of card reader machines by the electorate also necessitated the change of date for the election to the new date.

The chairman of the commission further disclosed that in view of the development, he puts a request before the state resident electoral commissioner for the release of the said machine; but due to litigations before INEC the card readers could not be accessed.

Alhaji Mohammed Danlami Abubakar therefore appeals to the leaders of political parties to bear with the commission over the shift of the election date, adding that they should assist the commission by informing their members on the challenges faced by the commission. According to him, 14 political parties existing in the state have cleared their candidates for both the chairmanship and councillorship positions and that the commission has received the names of all the cleared candidates for the election.
